BEE MINE: Adopt a Queen Bee Program
Why? Beekeepers may suffer up to 90% loss of colonies every year! More than 80% of our plants depend on pollinators. In the eastern portion of the United States 53 wild bee species are experiencing declines in population.
Even more astonishing: Each year, honey bee colony deaths/losses are financially devastating to beekepers. That’s right, beekeepers have an exceedingly difficult time paying for equipment and supplies to bring natures sweet remedy into your home and onto your table.
Next time you look at your plate of food, remember, 1/3 of your meal came from the work of these heavenly creatures.
Guess who is in charge? The Queen Bee! She has about 80,000 followers in her colony consisting of nurse bees, workers bees, elder bees and drones all with differing tasks to sustain the health of the entire community. Miraculously, all those bees only feel one Queen is buzz worthy. If something happens to her, the colony will replace her or the entire colony will fail.
How do we save the colony? We can install a new Queen or ensure they have the appropriate resources to make a new Queen. The nurse bees will select the best eggs and feed them Queen Royal Jelly. Then, we can let nature take it’s course and allow the strongest Queen to reign or we can cull Queen cells and leave just one for the colony to nurture. Cull means to remove or cut out competing Queen cells and create new colonies of bees.
Some reasons for declines in population: Habitat, nutrition, pesticides, disease, and management practices. At The Honey Bee Farm, we are dedicated to optimizing all conditions related to the care, maintenance and propagation of honey bees and their golden honey.
- Human encroachment and destruction of natural bee habitat, our habitat. Plus, backyard beekeepers who do not know best practices to keep their colonies healthy and alive.
- The neonicotides in pesticides prevents the bees from finding their way back home each night and other forms of pest control are detrimental to the survival of the colony.
- The Varroa Destructor Mite; Mite V out of Africa, is a vector for 25 different viruses that are detrimental to bee health as well as The Hive Beetle that can contaminate the honey comb so that the bees will abandon the hive and never return home.
- We have an innovative idea that could revolutionize beekeeping. If you are an accredited researcher and would like to partner in this endeavor. Please contact Ken, our Master Bee Keeper, directly to set up a confidential meeting.
Bee Rustling Awareness and Concerted Response Efforts: Other reasons for loss, which are common on the west coast, and are increasing along the east coast of the United States are bee hive theft. We know, it has happened to us. Spreading awareness and best practices will help to save our bees from thieves.
Description: The roles of honey bees as managed pollinators is essential in natural and agricultural settings. Our plan is to help everyone interested through a variety of resources and classes.

Here is how you can help: 100% of the proceeds from your contribution goes directly to the care and maintenance of our honeybee colonies in Columbus County, Brunswick County and New Hanover County, North Carolina.
